Radio Red – Bella Union
Laura Groves has been an enigmatic figure for much of the 2000s as Radio Red is only her second release since her debut, Blue Skies (as “Blue Skies”) – this time with the Bella Union label and under her given name. The major theme here on this album is one of communication or the lack thereof. Sprawling lullabies are the highlights of the later tracks, with the sonic soundscape hinting at indie folk and electronica measures. It is a tantalizing collection of moods and heavy emotions – showcasing glittering synths in a dream-pop swirl.
Track 4, “D 4 N,” is a synthy slinker that has the calming sounds of new age meditation music. Her voice takes hold and whirls around with introspective highs and lows. “Sky At Night,” track 1, plays like modern electro yacht rock – a slow pulsing, romantic tune with unearthly echoed vocals. Track 5, “I’m Not Crying,” has a late 80s sophisti-pop sound, bittersweet lyrics matched with emotionally longing vocals. “Any Day Now,” track 6 has a haunting, almost goth-like vibe and intensity, creating a mystical cloud of layered sounds.
A splattering of experimental and elegant tones that provide a comforting bubble with which to escape into. It seems that Laura Groves has embraced her renaissance period and will start to churn out more lovely melodies and intimate songs to provide solace in any evening listen.
