Adrian Younge Presents Linear Labs: Sao Paulo – Linear Labs

Multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer, Adrian Younge, shares his vision of Brazilian music through collaborations and his own funk-based and soul-influenced keyboard instrumentals. Oh – and guess what? He is also a lawyer and a law professor! His jams on this record celebrate the many textures and layers of music from Brazil, along with added flourishes that make this his own creation. The sounds may seem vintage, but the vibe is all modern and forward flowing. Collaborators include Snoop Dogg, Laetitia Sadier, ALI.NI, Samantha Schmutz, and Bilal.

Track 9, “Purification,” featuring Laetitia Sadier on vocals is a disjointed groove that harkens back to her old band, Stereolab. It’s the jumpy funk bassline that gives it an edge. “Nossa Cur,” track 5, shines with soulful Portuguese vocals from Samatha Schmutz. It sounds like an old classic – almost like a James Bond film theme. Track 1, “Esperando Por Voce,” slinks with an R&B rhythm and psych-rock guitar. It is trippy and hazy. Track 7, “Run,” fades in and out of a trip-hop beat from the 90s. Jazzy vocals from ALI.NI and an atmosphere that is ethereal to cradle her voice. Track 2, “Rules of the Game,” the track that features Snoop Dogg, recalls the vibe and sounds from Snoop’s debut album, Doggy Style.

The album itself is eclectic and fun. While the songs don’t flow into each other, they create a tapestry of sounds that capture the tones of South America and the joy of the beat.
