I’ve Got Me – Fat Possum

Minimal, acoustic, and personal – the new album from NYC based artist, Joanna Sternberg, is a journey in short strummed / piano keyed pop gems that show emotion through uncertainty and self-reflection. The eccentric vocals and lyrics remind me of the great Kimya Dawson and her collaboration with Adam Green in the Moldy Peaches. It is quirky alt-folk that is DYI at its core, but so deeply moving and powerful due to its simplistic form. They shine the light on loneliness and the human experience from a perspective that few follow – introspective and raw honesty that shows a distinct voice and the ability for contemplation.

The songs are tight, short, and feel as if you are sitting in their living room listening to a confessional of tunes while relaxing on the couch. The intimate setting provides a candid look into their psyche.

Track 5, “Mountains High,” has a gospel-like piano base that feels like it may have been written with Daniel Johnston – the emo folk and voice just tugs at your heart. “I Will Be With You,” track 2, is a contemplative missive that almost acts as a way to talk yourself into self-confidence – again, a piano is the main instrument, carried in part by violin in the background. Track 7, “Stockholm Syndrome,” plays on self-doubt and is guided by a strongly strummed guitar. One can see being in a NYC café listening to these tunes. The title track, “I’ve Got Me,” is a poignant reminder that one must love thyself before embarking on other relationships – it has an uplifting tone and is pure folk.
