IRA – Panico SLRS
What a discovery – a dense and deep collection of experimental ambient and lo-fi industrial indie music from Italy. Jacopo Incani, producing music out of Bologna as Iosonouncane – meaning I am a dog – presents a brooding album of 17 tracks that at times sound cinematic in scope, and other times enclosed in a small room. The tempo is a slow dirge, then pulsating beats, resembling darker Depeche Mode.
The fun of the album is the combination of languages – a mix of Italian, English, French, and Arabic, with some spots of Spanish as well. It is almost schizophrenic with mood, as the vocals live above in the clouds, then dive deep into the murky percussion. The first track, “hiver,” is orchestral and heated – a sense of urgency to the beat. The next track, “ashes,” featured a clanking thump and high energy through nearly its over 7-minute runtime, finishing off with a calm ending. Track 14, “sangre,” has an eerie guitar and echoey vocals that fills the spaces between the tribal drums.
IRA is not an album for those seeking a fun Summertime jam, it is serious and intense – hauntingly beautiful.
